In the center of Paris, the latest residential project by Claudio Silvestrin offers a breathtaking view of the city. But the true spectacle is inside where an accessorized cast bronze counter reflects a calm atmosphere of exclusive luxury and romantic spirituality.
Carte blanche: the project brief was clear. The only requirement was to create an apartment for a couple, with just one bedroom. Silvestrin takes the cueand comes up with his own story. As always, paying no attention to fads and tossing bourgeois conventions to the winds. He organizes an atemporal interior like a refuge, calm, fluid, without too many divisions or visual barriers. The clients are sophisticated and trusting ( a couple with grown children, for whom Silvestrin has already done another work of architecture, a penthouse in Monte Carlo), allowing him to stage his whole repertoire of architectural, philosophical and spiritual gestures that have made him famous. Starting with the four natural elements, used individually and together in almost all his projects, like the series of stores for Giorgio Armani or the Princi Bakeries. For this project, they are all called into play to define the geometry of the space: stone-earth and space-air, arranged vertically, of course, and fire and water, horizontally balanced at the two ends of the main axis of the dwelling. The apartment, on the upper level of a building on Avenue Montaigne, near the Champs Élysées, was originally divided into two units. A rectangle of 210 sqm, 31 meters long and 7-8 meters wide, joined by 60 sqm of balcony space, represented the starting point for the project: a regular space, with the exception of the two stairwells on the southern side. On the longer side, a series of continuous glazings open to the balcony facing Avenue Montaigne, erasing the north wall and offering a 180-degree view of the city towards the Arc de Triomphe. “With the drapes lowered the atmosphere becomes much less modern, much more conducive to meditation”, says Silvestrin, who is now finishing work on a restaurant that will soon open in another spectacular location, on the 32nd floor of the Shard, the skyscraper by Renzo Piano in London. Once inside, the gaze is captured by the narrow vertical window that frames the symbol of the city, the Eiffel Tower. A gesture on which the designer insisted, which required a long process to obtain permits, lasting more than one year, to be able to make two openings on the west side, by the sides of the niche for the fire. “The authorities are a cancer”, the architect wryly remarks, “you have to hope you will find some exceptions in the institutions, and – obviously – very patient clients”. The living area, furnished like the whole apartment with custom pieces, apart from a single Wegner chair, extends to reach the dining area, bathroom and bedroom, linked by a single feature, the long counter. One piece, without joints, of cast bronze, weigthing four tons, a monolith that connects the various areas: it starts as a dining table and then contains a built-in kitchen sink, a range, and the washstand of the master bedroom. On the side of the dining area the front panel of the counter can be electrically recessed to make space for the people sitting on the Le Spighe stools by Poltrona Frau; from the side of the glazings, a series of cedar benches can be lowered or raised to meet different needs. The only spaces concealed from view are the service zones: the wet kitchen, the pantry and three bathrooms. The materials are few in number but deployed in a range of finishes, the result of painstaking ongoing research: respecting the nature of the simple yet sufficiently sophisticated materials, making them extremely elegant. The floor is in large slabs (1.05 x 1.05 meters) of polished St. Maximin limestone, while hewn white porphyry is used for the walls of the showers – real wet rooms, one of which is even open to view at the center of the apartment – and for the fixed furnishing, from the massive low table in the living area to the enigmatic stele, two meters in height, in the bedroom. The bronze used for the counter returns in the ceiling and floor lamps, custom made by Viabizzuno, while cedar is used for the bench in the male dressing room, the seats in the dining zone and the panels that enclose the dry kitchen with the bar. In the bedroom water is an unexpected presence: it runs slowly along the stone slab inserted between the panels of a storage wall. The white porphyry stone stele finally reveals its surprising character: it features an opening into which the husband and wife can place messages and thoughts of love, notes that can never be recovered and read, however. “It is the idea of having something unique, that cannot be reproduced, the maximum of luxury”, says Silvestrin, “but it also represents unity and mystery, the romantic thread of mutual feeling that needs no confirmation”. So the theme of faith returns, of total trust in someone else, be it a partner or a designer.
